Eaton Terrace - growing up without growing out - the family home

London

Eaton Terrace

Our brief for this family home was to bring light and space to a very tall building offering limited room on each of its five floors. Poorly served by daylight, all bathrooms were on half landings and the basement laundry meant lots of carrying with no space for lift.

By adding an extra floor we moved the staircase between the basement and the ground floor away from wall into centre of the building and created a lightwell. We installed on the level en suites throughout and, adding a small rear extension, a further lightwell serving the ground floor.

Bright, comfortable and highly practical, today the family enjoy a stunning 21st century home, light, well-planned and ripe for re-sale in this prestigious area.

" ... they exceeded our expectations by a considerable margin."

"The entire project was highly imaginative.  The brief included the introduction of as much natural light as possible into our London terraced house and, in this, they exceeded our expectations by a considerable margin.  Imaginative ideas included slanting a glass roof upward and away from the house to give a feeling of light and space as well as a panoramic view.  Other notable ideas included use of a curved staircase to the basement kitchen/dining area and storage incorporated into a short staircase."  Margaret Williams

“Design is all around us, it doesn’t just ‘happen’. Some things in life are well designed and a pleasure to use or be part of. Whereas much is not and can directly affect our lives and wellbeing.”
John Fieldhouse MA RCA FCSD
